How to Play Marshall D. Teach OP09

If you’re looking for one of the most control-heavy, stall-based, and downright oppressive decks in the One Piece Card Game, Marshall D. Teach (OP09) aka Blackbeard, should be at the top of your list. With OP11 and EB01 support now out, this Black/Control deck has leveled up in a big way. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the full game plan, card choices, and tech decisions you need to know.

Deck Archetype Breakdown

Core Strategy: Deny opponent’s on-play effects, build up trash, win with massive stat bombs like Jesus Burgess (OP09-045) and 10-drop Teach.

Color: Black

Style: Control / Trash Synergy / Big Finishers

Leader: Marshall D. Teach (OP09-060)

Game Plan Overview

This deck is all about stalling your opponent out while disrupting their plays with your leader effect. You’ll be filling up your trash quickly using cards like This is my age! (OP09-046) and Fullalead (OP09-058), then using that trash to power up Jesus Burgess (OP09-045) or bring him back with Kuzan (OP10-043). You deny enemy plays, keep the board clear, and then slam your 10-cost Marshall D. Teach (OP09-061) to close the game.

Early Game Setup (1–2 Cost Cards)

Caribou (OP11-010): A 1-cost 2K blocker. Its on-play downside is negated by your leader ability, so it becomes a free wall.

Laffitte (OP11-023): Rest 1 DON! and this card to search top 5 for a Blackbeard Pirates card. Great for early filtering and pseudo-blocking.

This is my age! (OP09-046): Look at top 3, add a Blackbeard Pirates card to hand, rest go to trash. Synergizes well with Burgess/Kuzan.

Stronger (OP09-049): 2K counter. Can be used to drop a card, trash itself, and reduce an enemy’s cost by 2. Mostly used defensively or for trash fill.

Mid Game Control (3–6 Cost Cards)

Liberation (OP10-040): If you have 2 fewer characters, KO a 6-cost and a 4-cost. Huge comeback tool.

Doc Q (OP09-048): KO a 1-cost or less by resting. On KO: draw a card. Great utility.

Shiryu (OP10-031): 4-cost attacker. Gains +2000 power on opponent’s turn. On-play KO a 3-cost if leader is Blackbeard Pirates.

Van Augur (OP09-056): Lowers an enemy’s cost by 3, sets up Finger Pistols and Shiryu. On KO: draw a card.

Finger Pistol (EB01-025): Trash top 2 cards of deck to KO a 5-cost or less. Amazing value and has a busted trigger.

Black Hole (OP09-064): Negates a character’s effect and KOs if it’s 4-cost or less. Excellent removal against sticky threats.

Late Game Finishers

Marshall D. Teach (OP09-061): 10-cost, 12K blocker. On-play: negates a leader effect and a character’s effect. The affected character can’t attack until end of next turn. Game-ending bomb.

Jesus Burgess (OP09-045): Cannot be KO’d by effects. Gains +1000 power for each card in trash. Often sits at 10K–12K.

Kuzan (OP10-043): Trash to draw 1 and revive a 5-cost Blackbeard Pirates from trash (excluding another Kuzan). Main recursion engine.

Matchup Tips

Vs Midrange (Blue/Green): Abuse Van Augur + Finger Pistol to KO higher cost units. Time your 10-drop Teach carefully to swing tempo.

Vs Rush (Red): Use your leader effect aggressively early game to blank their on-play effects. Mulligan for Caribou and Doc Q.

Vs Control (Yellow/Black): Focus on building trash and powering Burgess. Don’t waste Finger Pistols early — save them for real threats.

Final Thoughts

Marshall D. Teach (OP09) is a deck that rewards tight play and matchup knowledge. With OP11 and EB01, the deck gets huge value from denying on-plays, filling the trash, and overwhelming the opponent with massive attackers and unremovable threats. Burgess is a monster, and Teach shuts down late-game bombs. This is a great pick for players who love control, recursion, and hard matchups that reward smart lines.
